President Cyril Ramaphosa Urges Teachers To Reduce Drop out Rate

On the 5th of October 2024 , South Africa Celebrated the World Teacher’s Day with the 24th National Teachers Awards in Ekurhuleni , Boksburg. The event was highlighted the crucial role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future and it was also to honour the Outstanding teachers.

A pressing concern in South Africa’s educational system is the alarming drop out rate. According to the statistic released by the Basic Education Department ,over 1 million learners drop out of school annually , with 40% of them not completing their grade 12. South Africa is facing  a major challenge has high school drop outs rate is nearly 9% of 17 year old and 3% of 15 year old not attending school and mostly the reason for drop out is poverty , teenage pregnancy and failing grades which discourages the learners leading to dropping out.

 


President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the issue and emphasized the importance of teachers’ involvement in learners lives. “The devoted educator gives learners their attention , guidance , encouragement and patience,”Ramaphosa said.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube echoed the President’s sentiments. “Teachers are the backbone of our education system.Their dedication and commitment are crucial in shaping the future of our children”.

 

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi stressed the need for a collective effort from the teachers . “We must work together to address the challenges facing our educational system .Teachers , parents and the government must unite to ensure that our children receive a better education.”

President Cyril Ramaphosa gave educators a challenge to continue being the hope of the nation , keeping the future of South Africa’s children brighter.
