The Gauteng Geographical Names committee visited the residents of Soshanguve on the 14 of August at Halala Community hall for the suggestions of renaming the important features of the province.

As part of the effort to reflect the rich and cultural diversity of Gauteng, the Gauteng Geographical Names committee called the community of Soshanguve to suggest new names for roads, rivers, and residential areas. It was an exciting opportunity for the people to contribute to the province’s identity and leave a long lasting legacy.

According to the GGNC, the renaming process was the key aspect to nation building and identity creation. The committee wanted to ensure that the geographic names accurately reflected to the province’s diverse cultural history.

“The purpose of the event is to create awareness about the whole process of geographical features of South Africa specifically , the province , we want people to understand the process of naming the geographical features and to participate in naming them by submitting applications for their respective names and they must not be long’’ explained Dr Mandla Mathebula the Chairperson.

The community has a strong sense of identity and the residents are eager to see their history and culture reflected in the names of their streets and landmarks. “We are happy to have the opportunity to rename our roads, rivers and all,” said a Soshanguve residence John Sibiya. “It’s a chance for us to reclaim our history and culture.”

During the community engagement, residents shared their respected suggestions for the names, which ranged from honouring notable features of South Africanhistory to reflecting to the area’s natural features.  “I will definitely be part of the people submitting my application for the renaming and I hope my application will be notices “said Miss Thato Rampedi.

As the people of Soshanguve look to the future, they do so with a renewed sense of purpose .Their voice will be heard and their suggestion will shape the provincial landscape, ensuring that the Gauteng Geographical names will reflect to the diversity of its people.
