Africa Check visited the Tshwane University of Technology North Campus on the 21st of August, After recess to see the journalism students of which are first years and second years.
Africa Check is a non profit organization that was set up in 2012 to promote accuracy in public debate and the media in Africa. What they do is a fact check across Africa. They taught students about the importance of fact checking before broadcasting or publishing any information in the media, since the internet can keep things even if deleted.
They taught students how unreliable it is to publish false statements and information and also the difference between the words false information and false statement of which one of the second years answered the question asked of the difference between the two , then she said “False statement is disinformation which is a form of untruthful statement made with the intention to deceive others and false information of which is misinformation is to spread or mislead information”.
It was so educational to know what to learn how important it is to not publish mistakes as a journalist as so it makes you unreliable to the public of which you serve.Publishing misleading information can get a journalist fired that was said in the presentation.Africa Check trains journalists how to fact check and how to use the google to find information .
We know that social media has taken the work of journalists so what journalists do is to fact check and show the public correct information.
